London retains top spot on AMEX Top Ten European Cities list

London remains the number one destination for events in Europe, according to the latest American Express Meetings & Events forecast.

The research published in The 2017 Global Meetings and Events Forecast, which is based on the activity of AMEX customers, showed that Barcelona took second spot, while Amsterdam came in third.

London & Partners, the city’s convention bureau, has also reported a 41 per cent increase in enquiries, between June and September, following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. This rise is reflected across all markets, with US enquiries going up 22 per cent over the period, EMEA enquiries rising by 22 per cent and domestic enquiries increasing by 83 per cent.

Deborah Kelly, Business Development Manager, UK at London & Partners, said: “This summer has been very busy for our team and we’re pleased to see that London remains as appealing to meeting planners as ever. The capital is one of the world’s leading destinations for business events and the results of the UK’s EU referendum will not change this. London is a leading centre for sectors such as tech, life sciences, finance and the creative industries and the city is, and will remain, open for business.”

In recent years, London has welcomed a string of high profile corporate and association events, including HPE Discover London, TechCrunch Disrupt Europe, Broadband World Forum and the ESC (European Cardiology Society) Congress.

Looking ahead, London will host other major events such as the Alzheimer's Association International Conference and the European Association of Urology congress in 2017 and Sibos in 2019.
