Community partner receives ‘covid hero’ award

The Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA), one of our five local charity partners, received special recognition recently for their work during the pandemic.

Founded by Natasha Hart MBE, the East London organisation works with young people to provide basketball coaching, training, and after-school activities to help reduce antisocial behaviour, under the mantra of ‘carry a basketball not a blade’.

Along with 11 other winners, Natasha was presented with her ‘covid hero’ award at Beckon Station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), where a commemorative plaque has also been fitted to one of the train carriages in recognition of her achievements.

Natasha’s work in the local community has proved even more valuable during the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, offering hundreds of youngsters’ support and someone to talk to through a fun, safe environment.

A delighted Natasha, who has also carried the Olympic Torch in 2012 before receiving an MBE from the Queen in 2015, received her presentation from DLR representatives, together with one of her son’s Anthony.
