Global network reinvented

UFI Global Congress 2020

It’s all change

Every year the global exhibitions’ industry meets at the UFI Global Congress to discuss the future and where the industry is headed.  It is a chance to hear from industry leaders, learn best practices and catch up with colleagues and friends from around the world.

This year was different. The original plan for one physical Congress in Muscat, Oman evolved into four regional events, which six weeks before the Congress had to switch to becoming a fully digital event.

The 2020 congress was reimagined for the times we live in.

Keeping the faith

The UFI team was determined to create an experience that could unite the industry, provide a sense of belonging and an opportunity to learn. It was important to recognise early in the planning process that most live experiences can’t be replicated in a digital world. The focus was, therefore, on delivering the highest quality content.

Appreciating that this year would throw up different challenges for the organising team, London was chosen as the location for the European day because of the proximity for the presenting team and the strength of local relationships.

Know the unknowns

With limited experience of organising a digital event, the task can be a daunting prospect, particularly when the timescale is tight. It is a huge leap from hosting Zoom webinars and meetings to a professional broadcast.

A turnkey solution is much easier for organisers who are faced with sourcing their own studio location, installing lighting, sound, cameras, and backdrops, as well as providing their own technical support. An experienced partner is critical to producing a successful event, not least because their insight can help steer the solution to meet the objectives without the organiser being steeped in the technical detail.

"Creating a high production value broadcast for the UFI Global Congress was an absolute priority.  We have an exacting and knowledgeable community, so the level of professionalism and quality had to hit the mark.  This was a steep learning curve for our team, but it has been a fantastic experience that we can build on as we start the conversation as to how we harness this new model of content delivery in the future. I want to say a big thank you to the teams at Excel and Anna Valley for helping us produce our first digital event to the high standards our members expect of us."

Nick Dugdale-Moore, Regional Manager, Europe, UFI
